When you climb a mountain, there are always a number of sources of danger you are aware of. Rock slides, tripping and falling to death, lack of oxygen, avalanches, lightning, bears... this is what you'd call a calculated risk. You know that you can hurt yourself badly or even die, but you do it anyhow.

When you go downtown, there are hundreds of sources of danger you are aware of. Cars, trucks, gangs, grandmas and grandpas, skateboarders who think they own the entire city, meteors, terrorists... this is what you'd call a calculated risk. You know that you can hurt yourself badly or even die, but you do it anyhow.

When you go into the desert, there are chances that you won't make it back alive. There is the heat, the sun, the lack of water, the snakes and scorpions and all these other ugly little monsters, terrorists who want to kidnap you to make some money for weapons... this is what you'd call a calculated risk. You know that you can hurt yourself badly or even die, but you go there anyhow.

When you go on a tropical island, you expose yourself to alot of danger. Deadly insects which carry the most horrible diseases humanity knows about, sharks, squals, snakes (again! yes! they're everywhere!), pirates, terrorists (yes! they're everywhere too!), storms, volcanos, earthquakes, floods and... tsunamis... this is what you'd call a calculated risk. You know that you can hurt yourself badly or even die, but you go there on vacation anyhow...

If you want to reduce the chances to get hurt or die, stay at home.

Humans where often forced to settle in dangerous areas for economical reasons. Tourism, agriculture, industry... People who settle such locations are always aware of the dangers, but it's either that or no wealth and money. But when, I ask you, will people finaly understand that there is no amount of money on this earth which could bring a loved one back to life...
